Inner South Wedding Music

Weddings > Melbourne > Inner South
The region stretching from Williamstown to St Kilda, incorporating Southbank, South Melbourne, and Albert Park, is one of Melbourne’s most vibrant areas for entertainment. Our musicians and DJs have performed at more weddings in this area than perhaps any other in the state. Read about some of them below.
Southbank Wedding Musician
Hande and Adam held their wedding at Metropolis Events in Southbank. Original plan was to have ceremony and cocktails outdoors in King’s Domain Gardens, but good old Melbourne weather intervened, and we relocated into the venue. They hired me for their Southbank wedding as a solo musician for the ceremony and cocktails. Hande chose to walk down the aisle to You And Me by Lifehouse, a beautiful song I never get tired of performing:
The couple chose Crazy by Seal and Fast Car by Tracy Chapman for the signing, then they walked back up the aisle to 3am by Matchbox 20.
St Kilda Acoustic Duo
Cecilia and Augustine held their wedding reception at Encore St Kilda Beach. This is a fabulous venue next to the St Kilda Sea Baths, and right on the beach.
Encore is a dream venue for musicians and DJs: they have a high-end Nexo PA system in-house, along with a skilled operator. All we had to bring was our instruments, microphones, and a foldback speaker so we could hear ourselves. The couple originally only wanted a female soloist for the first half of the reception, but as I was going to have to be there all night to DJ anyway I offered our acoustic duo at the same price. Why? Because I’d rather be playing than sitting around twiddling my thumbs.
For their first dance Cecelia and Augustine chose A Whole New World from the Disney movie Aladdin. After that I switched to DJ and kicked off the dance floor with a set of Korean K-Pop songs. As is typical with Asian weddings things wound down pretty quickly after the meal and formalities, but I still got lots of requests from the younger guests, along with some spontaneous karaoke to Wonderwall by Oasis.
St Kilda Acoustic Trio
Celeste and Derek booked Harbour Room at Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron in St Kilda, hiring our acoustic trio and DJ to cover the entire wedding. Ceremony and cocktails were held on the roof. We were asked to learn Sweet Child o’ Mine by Guns n’ Roses for her procession. This is Celeste’s father’s favourite song. I was told he cried when he heard us playing it! This is a song that I think sounds even better acoustic than the rock band of the original recording. At the couple’s request we slowed it down, shortened it, and added vocal harmonies. It became a staple of our wedding repertoire.
During the signing of the marriage certificates our acoustic trio played Perfect by Ed Sheeran and Your Song by Elton John. Perennial favourite Signed Sealed Delivered by Stevie Wonder was the recessional song. The couple asked their guests for a song request on the wedding invites. This is always a great idea, especially if you don’t have the time to come up with play lists for us.
Our acoustic trio comes in an array of different lineups. Celeste and Derek had their hearts set on having our percussionist Dan. Featuring two vocalists, guitar, keyboard, congas, djembe, kick drum, and hi-hats, this allows for a very full sound while still keeping the volume at background levels.
The reception was held on the first floor. This is a large and fairly live space. We played as a trio over dinner. Then Kristen and Dan bumped out and I switched to DJ. First dance song was Can’t Take My Eyes Off You by Frankie Valli. Then I opened the dance floor with a medley of Celeste and Derek’s college fresher dance songs: We Like To Party by The Vengaboys, I Love It by Icona Pop, and Lonely Boy by the Black Keys. Final song of the night was Closing Time by Semisonic.
Port Melbourne Wedding DJ
There are so many amazing yacht club venues on Port Phillip Bay! Steph and Mitch booked Port Melbourne Yacht Club for their wedding reception, which was held on a wild and windy February day. From the comfort of the reception room we watched the waves crash and the kite surfers tear it up. Original plan was the have canapes out on the deck, but it was just too cold and windy out there.
They hired me as musician and DJ for their Port Melbourne wedding. The bridal party entered the reception to Show Me Love by Mobin Master. Then I performed solo over entree. I’d brought the drums, which was perfect for this space. It’s a big, live room, but the dance floor was situated between the guests and myself so there was never any chance of being too loud.
Speeches followed. Highlight for me was a hilarious speech by Mitch’s best man. Then mains, and I got back into the live music, receiving lots of great requests from a very engaged and friendly crowd. Steph and Mitch chose Sexy Love by Ne-Yo for their first dance. They’re a funny, laidback couple who don’t take themselves too seriously, and this was reflected in their dance.
Then I kicked off into a DJ set of retro pop and rock, per the couple’s request. Always a good idea to entertain the oldies first, as they usually don’t last as long on the dance floor. In any case everyone loves ABBA and Tina Turner. After an hour or so I switched over to bangers from the 2000s and 2010s: Usher, Pharrell, Bruno Mars, Nelly, Kanye, and the like. This crowd were into stock wedding party songs. Which is cool. Those songs always work, and you don’t run the risk of clearing the dance floor with some obscure request.
DJ & Sax Melbourne
Danielle and Lochlan booked us for their wedding only two weeks out. Their DJ had double-booked himself, so had referred them on to me. They had their hearts set on DJ and sax for their Melbourne wedding. It was held at Gardens House in the Royal Botanic Gardens. This is a great, unique venue close to the city. The management and staff are brilliant – amazing hosts, and so helpful in every way.
Danielle and Lochlan hired me to provide background music downstairs in the garden over cocktails and dinner. This was a small and low-key wedding, immaculately styled. I really liked how they asked the guests to dress colour co-ordinated: white and tan. Kind of like a wedding safari! Their music tastes leaned towards old school soul and RnB. Their friend Shaun took on MC duties for the night and did a great job.
After dinner and speeches the guests all trooped upstairs to a room where my main PA system was set up, and we launched into the party. The couple chose Beautiful Things by Benson Boone for their first dance. Halfway through everyone jumped on the dance floor and our saxophonist Aaron joined in. DJing with a sax player is a bit cheesy, but a lot of fun.
