Best Wedding Photographers in Melbourne
By Matt Black | 18th October 2024 | 10 min read
We’ve worked with hundreds of wedding photographers in Melbourne and throughout country Victoria. Our favourites don’t just take amazing shots, they’re friendly, flexible, and fun. In this article we’ve whittled it down to the cream of the crop: the very best wedding photographers in Melbourne.
Rick Liston
We first met Rick back in 2017 at a wedding at Yarra Valley Estate, and immediately hit it off. Since then we’ve worked alongside him at many weddings. What we love about him (apart from his jaw-dropping photos) is that he always has time for you. He’s your all-round nice guy, a generous and patient dude, and just a pleasure to be around.
Rick is one of the more creative wedding photographers around. No boring cookie-cutter wedding photos here. His photos really stand out amongst the work of hundreds of other wedding photographers, and are instantly recognisable. He works hard to get those timeless shots you’ll still be looking at in 20 years’ time.
Rick is a wedding ninja. He’s all about capturing those raw and unguarded milliseconds, the candid moments, the genuine emotions of you and your guests on your wedding day. To that end he’s subtle and discreet. You’ll hardly know he’s there.
Rick is always relaxed on the day, and that rubs off on everyone around him. He seems to attract couples who want fun and stress-free weddings. With Rick at the helm your shoot will be a blast. And when it’s time to party he whirls into action. Rick loves to hit the dance floor with you and your guests, camera in hand.
Note that as a resident of the Yarra Valley Rick services that area exclusively. He can be contacted through his website.
Caity & Duncan
Caity & Duncan are the power couple of wedding photographers in Melbourne. When it comes to a combination of professionalism, personality, attention to detail, and downright friendliness, they’re the dream team.
Caity & Duncan will bring a personal touch to your wedding. They love getting to know each couple and what’s unique about them. Like, genuinely love it. Then they use their expertise to capture your authentic selves for perpetuity.
The thing that first impressed me about them was how passionate they are about what they do. Weddings aren’t just a job to them. You’d be hard-pressed finding two more genuine, down-to-earth people in this industry. We love hanging out with them at a wedding.
Their thing is creating timeless footage. That means crafting photos and video that will bring back memories of the look and feel of your wedding for years to come. And if you love the atmosphere and nostalgia of film, they also shoot photos on 35mm film and video on Super 8. Classic!
You can get in touch with Caity & Duncan via their website.
Doux Wedding Photography
If you’re looking for someone relaxed, unpretentious, and funny, Alvin from Doux Wedding Photography is your guy.
With his outgoing personality and self-deprecating humour he’s great at getting everyone at a wedding to let their guard down. This results in photos that are candid, unposed, and fun.

You can get in touch with Alvin through his website or on 0433 142 522.

Miss Pickle
We love Verity from Miss Pickle Photography. With her open and unguarded personality, and a shared passion for music (she’s a sucker for live gigs and music festivals), we made friends instantly.
Verity is a true people person. If you want a photographer who will feel like part of the family, she’s your girl. She’s always a fun presence at a wedding, carrying out her job with warmth, humour, and verve.

Her style for weddings is relaxed and candid. She will never force you to pose or smile. Most of all she wants you to have fun. Miss Pickle is a great choice if you’re open to having fun (and funny) shots at your wedding, that naturally showcase the personalities of you and your wedding party. To achieve this she knows how and when to become invisible. That’s not to say she won’t hit the dance floor with you at the reception!
Verity is based on the Mornington Peninsula, but is happy to travel anywhere – including to shoot destination weddings. You can get in touch with her on 0431 055 943 or via her website.
Choosing Wedding Photographers
Choosing a wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your wedding. Venue, food, and entertainment are all vital on the day, but wedding photos are forever. Here are some tips on how to choose the best wedding photographers in Melbourne, and how to get the most out of them both on the day and in the leadup to your wedding.
1. DECIDE HOW IMPORTANT THE PHOTOS ARE TO YOU
For most couples wedding photos are high priority, and will take up a significant portion of the wedding budget. But some prioritise other things, or video over stills. It’s your wedding, and your choice. So ask yourself how much you care about having those memories recorded in still photography, and set your budget accordingly.
2. THEN KEEP YOUR EXPECTATIONS IN LINE WITH YOUR BUDGET
You get what you pay for, most of the time. Don’t expect high-end service or photos from a budget wedding photographer. So you’ve decided how much you want to spend on photography. Okay, now manage your expectations.
3. KEEP AN OPEN MIND
You can go into it with too rigid an idea about what kind of photos you want. Be prepared to be surprised. Don’t feel you have to comply to some preconception about what wedding photos should be, whether that’s formed by fashion, or what your friends did at their wedding, or what the photographer themselves has in mind.
4. FIND PHOTOS THAT KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF
The reaction shouldn’t be “that’s a nice photo”, but “WOW!”. There are usually only a couple of photos taken at a wedding that are truly jaw-dropping, but that’s the main difference between a good wedding photographer and a great one. You want a photographer who knows how to spot and capture those killer shots. And for that you might need to spend a bit more.
5. FIND WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS WHO ARE FLEXIBLE
A photographer with a cookie-cutter approach to wedding photography, who shoots every wedding the same, is probably going to deliver stock wedding photos for you and nothing more. There are plenty of those in Melbourne. What you want is a flexible wedding photographer. The variety in their portfolio is going to give you a good idea how adaptable and creative they are.
6. GIVE THEM WHAT THEY NEED, THEN LET THEM DO THEIR JOB
A good wedding photographer doesn’t need to be micromanaged. You’ll get the best out of them if you give them the freedom to do what they do best and take some creative risks. At the same time they’re going to want to get to know you in order to capture your personalities, so don’t be shy.
7. HAVE FUN!
Wedding photos shouldn’t be a chore. Just relax and enjoy it. If you’re nervous get a couple of drinks into you (but only a couple please grooms). Forget about the logistics – let your wedding photographer worry about those. The more relaxed you are the better your photos will be. As someone who hates having his photo taken as much as anyone, I understand the struggle. But look at it as the one day where you have to let down your guard. Do it for your partner. I can guarantee they’ll appreciate it in the years to come. And you will too.
8. DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY
Sorry, you probably have that song stuck in your head now. If there’s one mistake we see couples make more than any other, it’s to worry and stress too much about their wedding day. But I’ll let you in on a secret: perfect weddings are unicorns. Often it’s the imperfections and unplanned moments that are what make it most memorable. So forget about a “perfect” wedding. Just concentrate on enjoying yourself, and leave the professionals to handle the details.
